When Philip says, "Show us the Father and we shall be satisfied," he is articulating our desire for an esoteric experience of God. Put another way, he is expressing our clamoring for a God we can compartmentalize, privatize, and control. The Holy Spirit comes instead to shatter our controlling ego, give us life itself, and set us free.
